In Memory of Eric York

Eric started every morning drinking from a coffee mug he had had made for himself; the mug bore the picture of a cougar and the bold letters FTP, which stood for “For The Puma.” I can remember his grin when he unassumingly explained to me, between sips of black brew, that his days-- from first pre-dawn cup of coffee to finish-- were dedicated to cougars. And he meant it. Eric devoted his entire adult life to carnivore conservation.

Eric York will be missed. He remains one of the most talented field biologists I’ve ever met. His dedication to wildlife conservation and distinctive field skills set a high bar for all of us who strive to support conservation efforts through field research. Yet it was his humor, generous nature, and non-competitive, quiet calm that I believe are more important to emulate—Eric had a magical way of bridging opposing people, parties and communities.

Zara McDonald has created a memorial for him at http://felidaefund.org/. There you will see Eric in his element, in the field among cougars. Visit the site and smile at the photos.
